The Forest Department of Uttarakhand is said to have found the evidence of Snow Leopards inhabiting in six valleys of the state. As per Hindustan Times report, the department had conducted a 15-day survey in June 2015, in which traces of the endangered species of Snow Leopard were found in six out of 16 valleys in Uttarakhand.
According to Digvijay Singh Khati, thirty-nine pieces of evidences, including dropping and scats have been found and they will soon be sent for DNA analysis to determine the number of Snow Leopards in the region. Khati further stated that the state is hopeful with the findings; Uttarakhand is likely to be covered under the Global Snow Leopard and Ecosystem Protection Programme that includes 12 range countries, where this elusive big cat is found. “Through this project, we would be able to do better habitat management of the species” said Khati. It is to be noted that in 2013, 12 range countries, including India, Russia, Afghanistan, China, Kazakhstan, Nepal, Bhutan, Pakistan, Kyrgyzstan, Mongolia, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan, signed up for “Global Snow Leopard and Ecosystem Protection Programme” in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan.
The traces of Snow Leopards were earlier recorded on camera traps in Gangotri and Nanda Devi. It is worth noting that Uttarakhand is among the five states, including Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Sikkim and Arunachal Pradesh, where snow leopards have been spotted. However, the absence of a population map of the animals in state created a hurdle for its inclusion in the Project Snow Leopard launched by the Union Ministry of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change in 2009. In order to qualify, potential states had to identify the animal’s habitats and draft management plans, which the state was unable to perform. However, Uttarakhand this time has proceeded meticulously with professional approach and is hopeful to be included in Global Snow Leopard and Ecosystem Protection Programme.
According to WWF India, there remain as less as 4000 Snow Leopards in the world with only 500 in India.

Wildlife Safari in the core area of the national parks is always a relaxed and fun activity and it proves to be one of the best holiday ideas you can ever have. It is not only adventurous and thrilling but educational as well. Hard core wildlife lovers and researchers frequently go for these exciting activities. In order to make sure you avail the best out of this experience, take a look at a few things check here. It should keep your mind alive and fresh while going on a wildlife safari.
Respect Wildlife: Do not get down from the vehicle under any circumstances until and unless your guide gives you permission. It becomes tempting to capture that perfect photo. You will be best advised to adjust your camera to reach there. Do not disturb the wildlife and keep your voice at a low pitch and excitement level under control. Please remember that you are not in your own territory and animals have a better sense of smell than us humans!
Stay Safe and within your boundaries: Stay well within your confined limits at all times. Do not try to walk around the core area of the national park and even at the entry gates of the park. You need to be careful of wild animals.
There’s also animal spotting etiquette: While the guide and driver do their very best to help you tick off every animal on your wish list, it doesn’t always happen. So keep patient and remember that these wildlife parks and game reserves are vast and provide enough camouflage to the animals. Additionally, please bear in mind that others also have their wish lists!
Keep Those Gadgets Away: If you must carry your cell phone (the chances of getting a good signal are weak!), keep it in silent mode. Same goes for your camera and any other electronic device you might be carrying. The constant beeping can disturb animals and annoy your co-passengers. The only sound anyone would want to hear is those of animals and birds.
Pack Wisely: It’s okay to leave some books behind. You are on a wildlife safari after all, and not in an examination hall!! Pack light and keep only the essentials like binoculars, hat, sunscreen and a pair of sunglasses.
Dress smartly and modestly: You could experiment with colors other than khaki but try to wear clothes that are not too flashy or bright. Go for comfortable cottons that you don’t mind getting some dust on. Remember to layer up as per the weather condition.
